The novel follows Little
Nell Trent, a kind and gentle orphan who lives with her grandfather in his
shop filled with old curiosities in London. Her grandfather loves her dearly

in hopes of winning enough money to leave her a fortune.
To fund his addiction, he
borrows money from the malicious and grotesque Daniel Quilp, a dwarf and
moneylender. When the grandfather's debts mount and the truth is revealed,
Quilp seizes the shop, forcing Nell and her grandfather to flee and wander the
countryside as beggars.
Their journey is filled
with hardships and encounters with both kind and cruel people. As they fall
deeper into poverty, Nell becomes weak and ill from the stress and exhaustion
of caring for her increasingly confused and unstable grandfather.
Meanwhile, Kit Nubbles,
a loyal boy who once worked in the shop, tries to help Nell. He is wrongfully
accused of theft by another villain, Mr. Brass, but is eventually
cleared of all charges with the help of kind friends.
By the time Nell and her
grandfather are found in a remote village, it's too late — Nell dies from
exhaustion and illness, leaving the grandfather heartbroken. He dies soon
after, unable to live without her.
