"Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, tells the swashbuckling tale of Captain Jack Sparrow, a flamboyant and eccentric pirate, and his quest to reclaim his beloved ship, the Black Pearl.
The story begins with the
young Elizabeth Swann, daughter of Governor Weatherby Swann, discovering a boy,
Will Turner, adrift at sea after a shipwreck. She finds a mysterious Aztec gold
medallion around his neck and, fearing he's a pirate, hides it.
Eight years later,
Elizabeth has grown into a beautiful young woman, and Will is a talented
blacksmith in love with her, though their social standings keep them apart.
Commodore James Norrington proposes to Elizabeth, but she faints from a tight
corset and falls into the harbor, activating the medallion and drawing the
attention of the Black Pearl.
The Black Pearl,
captained by the ruthless Hector Barbossa (Jack Sparrow's former first mate who
led a mutiny and marooned him), attacks Port Royal. They are searching for the
last piece of cursed Aztec gold to break a centuries-old curse that has turned
them into undead skeletons under the moonlight. They believe Elizabeth, due to
the medallion she's wearing, is the key to lifting the curse. They kidnap her.
Will Turner, distraught,
enlists the help of the recently imprisoned Captain Jack Sparrow to rescue
Elizabeth. Jack agrees, secretly aiming to reclaim the Black Pearl. They
commandeer a Royal Navy ship and set sail for Tortuga to gather a crew. During
their journey, Will learns that his father, "Bootstrap Bill" Turner,
was a pirate and was once part of Barbossa's crew. He also learns that it's his
father's blood, not Elizabeth's, that is needed to break the curse, as
Bootstrap Bill was the one who sent the medallion away.
They eventually track the Black
Pearl to Isla de Muerta, a hidden cavern filled with the cursed Aztec
treasure. A massive battle ensues between Barbossa's undead crew, Jack, Will,
Elizabeth, and the pursuing Royal Navy led by Commodore Norrington. Jack,
always thinking ahead, orchestrates events to his advantage, using his
knowledge of the curse to outmaneuver Barbossa.
In the climactic fight,
Jack and Barbossa duel. Just as Barbossa believes he has defeated Jack, Will,
having learned the truth about his father, returns the final medallion with his
blood, breaking the curse. This makes Barbossa mortal again, and Jack, with his
single shot remaining from his pistol, finally kills his old nemesis. The other
pirates, now mortal, are either killed or surrender to the Navy.
Though Jack is once again
captured and sentenced to hang, Will and Elizabeth, now openly admitting their
love for each other, aid in his escape. Jack makes a daring leap into the sea
and is rescued by the Black Pearl's crew, who have returned for him.
Norrington, witnessing Will's loyalty and Elizabeth's defiance, grants them a
day's head start. The film concludes with Jack, once again captain of the Black
Pearl, sailing off into the horizon, ready for new adventures.
