The Secret Garden tells the story of Mary Lennox, a spoiled and lonely 10-year-old girl living in India. After her parents die of cholera, she is sent to live with her wealthy but reclusive uncle, Archibald Craven, at Misselthwaite Manor in the English countryside.
At first, Mary is rude and
unhappy, but the fresh air, vast gardens, and the kindness of the servants help
her change. She learns about a locked, hidden garden on the estate that
has been closed since her aunt died ten years earlier.
With the help of a robin
and a servant boy named Dickon, Mary finds the key and secretly begins
restoring the neglected garden. As the garden comes back to life, so does Mary.
She later discovers her
cousin Colin Craven, a sickly boy hidden away in the house, who believes
he is going to die. Mary brings Colin to the secret garden, and with fresh air,
friendship, and encouragement, he too begins to heal—physically and
emotionally.
By the end of the story, both
children are transformed: Mary becomes kind and joyful, Colin becomes
healthy and strong, and Mr. Craven finally returns home to find his son well
and the family reunited.
