Lady Frances Carfax is a wealthy, unmarried Englishwoman who often travels alone across Europe. When she suddenly stops writing to her old governess, who is worried about her safety, Dr. Watson is sent by Sherlock Holmes to investigate her disappearance.
Watson follows her trail
through Lausanne (Switzerland), Baden (Germany), and then to Montpellier,
but he only finds vague clues. Eventually, the trail leads to London,
where Holmes himself takes over the investigation.
Holmes suspects that a
mysterious preacher named Dr. Shlessinger, who is actually a dangerous
criminal in disguise, has something to do with her disappearance. Holmes
deduces that Lady Frances may have been kidnapped for her jewels or money.
In a dramatic climax,
Holmes and Watson arrive just in time to rescue Lady Frances, who has
been locked inside a coffin and was about to be buried alive by the criminals
trying to steal her wealth.
