The Dry Spell

Santiago is an old Cuban fisherman who has gone eighty four days without catching a single fish He is considered fundamentally unlucky by the local village so the parents of his young apprentice Manolin force the boy to leave the old man and work on more successful boats Despite this Manolin still cares deeply for Santiago bringing him food and helping him carry his gear each day

The Great Marlin

On the eighty fifth day Santiago sails his small skiff far out into the Gulf Stream determined to break his streak of bad luck In the middle of the day a massive marlin takes his bait The fish is so powerful that instead of Santiago pulling it in the marlin begins to tow the small boat further out into the open ocean

The Battle of Endurance

The battle between the old man and the great fish lasts for three grueling days Santiago holds the heavy fishing line with his bare hands causing deep cuts and painful cramps Despite his intense physical suffering exhaustion and loneliness he develops a deep respect and fraternal love for the marlin viewing it as a noble brother rather than an enemy On the third day the marlin circles the boat and Santiago pulls it close enough to kill it with a harpoon

The Sharks and the Return

Santiago lashes the massive marlin to the side of his skiff and begins the long journey home However the scent of blood from the dead fish attracts sharks A desperate struggle begins as Santiago defends his prize using whatever tools he has including his harpoon an oar with a knife tied to it and a club He kills several sharks but they eventually devour all the meat leaving only the giant skeleton of the fish

Conclusion

Santiago returns to the harbor late at night exhausted and broken in body but undefeated in spirit He crawls to his shack and falls into a deep sleep The next morning the village fishermen are amazed by the massive eighteen foot skeleton attached to his boat Manolin weeps with relief to see Santiago alive and promises to fish with him once again while the old man dreams of lions on the beaches of Africa
