Jonas begins his training with the current Receiver, an old man who asks Jonas to call him "The Giver." For the first time in his life, Jonas experiences the breathtaking beauty of colors, the thrill of riding a sled through real snow, and the warmth of a family gathering celebrating Christmas. The Dark Discovery

The Escape Plan
Deeply traumatized, Jonas and The Giver concoct a desperate plan to change their society. They realize that if Jonas escapes the community and travels past its borders into Elsewhere, all the memories he has accumulated will burst free and flood back into the minds of the citizens, forcing them to confront the reality of human emotion. The plan is accelerated when Jonas learns that Gabriel, a sweet newborn infant his family has been temporarily caring for, is scheduled to be released the very next morning for failing to sleep through the night.
Conclusion
Jonas flees into the night, stealing his father's bicycle and taking the infant Gabriel with him. He embarks on a grueling journey toward the unknown outer world, constantly dodging search planes by using memories of cold and snow to lower their body temperatures and hide from thermal sensors. As they travel deeper into Elsewhere, the landscape turns bitterly cold and food becomes scarce, leaving both Jonas and Gabriel near death. In the novel's ambiguous final moments, Jonas finds a real wooden sled at the top of a snow-covered hill—exactly like the first memory he received. He and Gabriel slide down the hill toward a valley glowing with warm lights, where he hears people singing, leaving it up to the reader to decide if they have truly found salvation or if it is merely a dying hallucination.
