Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl - Summary
Roald Dahl's "Fantastic
Mr. Fox" is a charming children's novel about a clever fox who outwits
three mean-spirited farmers.
Plot Summary
The story revolves around Mr.
Fox, a cunning fox who lives in a hill with his wife and four small fox
cubs. Every night, to feed his family, Mr. Fox steals food from the farms of
three wealthy but cruel farmers: Boggis, Bunce, and Bean.
Boggis is enormously fat and eats constantly, Bunce is a pot-bellied dwarf who
eats geese and dumplings, and Bean is a skinny cider-drinker, considered the
cleverest of the three.
The farmers are fed up
with Mr. Fox's constant thievery and decide to catch him at all costs. First,
they try to ambush him, but Mr. Fox narrowly escapes, losing his tail in the
process. After this incident, the farmers begin to dig up the hill where the
foxes live, attempting to unearth them from their home.
As the farmers excavate
the ground with their powerful machines, Mr. Fox and his family dig deeper and
deeper to escape. However, this leaves them trapped underground and starving.
The farmers set up camp around the hill, waiting for the foxes to emerge.
Mr. Fox, seeing his family
and other underground animals (weasels, badgers, etc.) facing starvation,
devises a brilliant plan. Using his cunning, he tunnels secretly past the
farmers and into the storerooms of all three farms. He raids Boggis's chicken house,
Bunce's duck and goose house, and Bean's cider cellar.
Mr. Fox gathers an
abundant feast, not just for his own family, but for all the other hungry
underground animals who have also been trapped. Ultimately, they establish a
safe and permanent underground home, enjoying a never-ending feast while the
farmers remain cluelessly waiting above ground, utterly defeated.
