Summary:
Five Children
and It is a magical story about
five siblings — Cyril, Anthea, Robert, Jane, and their baby brother, the
Lamb — who discover a strange, ancient creature called a Psammead,
or sand-fairy, while playing in a gravel pit near their countryside
home.
The Psammead has the power
to grant one wish per day, but each wish only lasts until sunset.
The children are thrilled and begin making wishes — for beauty, wings,
treasure, and more. However, every wish they make leads to unexpected
trouble or chaos. For example, when they wish for gold coins, they cannot
spend them; when they wish to be beautiful, nobody recognizes them.
As the children learn from
their mistakes, they grow wiser and more thoughtful. Eventually, they stop
wishing and say goodbye to the Psammead, realizing that real life — with all
its imperfections — is better than magical wishes gone wrong.
