The Pelican Brief by John Grisham is a fast-paced legal thriller filled with political intrigue, danger, and suspense.
Summary:
Two U.S. Supreme Court
Justices are assassinated within hours of each other. The murders shock the
nation, and no one knows the motive or the connection between the two.
Darby Shaw, a brilliant law student in New Orleans,
writes a legal brief (later called The Pelican Brief) proposing a
theory: the two justices were killed to influence a future Supreme Court
decision that would affect a major environmental case. Her brief points to Victor
Mattiece, a powerful oil tycoon who wants to drill for oil in protected
Louisiana marshlands — home to an endangered species of pelicans. The justices
were likely to vote against his interests.
Darby shares the brief
with her professor and lover, Thomas Callahan, who passes it on to a
friend in the FBI. Soon after, Callahan is killed by a car bomb — and Darby
realizes she is being hunted.
She goes on the run and
teams up with Gray Grantham, an investigative reporter from The
Washington Post. Together, they uncover the shocking truth behind the
assassinations, facing threats and danger at every turn.
Eventually, with Darby’s
evidence and courage, the conspiracy is exposed, the truth is published, and
justice is served.
