Summary of Dracula
Jonathan
Harker’s Journey:
Young English solicitor Jonathan Harker travels to Transylvania
to help a client, Count Dracula, purchase property in England. At
Dracula’s castle, Harker soon realizes he is a prisoner. He notices strange
occurrences—Dracula casts no reflection, crawls down walls, and feeds on blood.
Harker barely escapes with his life.
Dracula in
England:
Back in England, Harker’s fiancée Mina Murray is visiting her friend Lucy
Westenra, a beautiful young woman who is being courted by three suitors.
Lucy falls ill and begins sleepwalking. She is unknowingly being preyed upon by
Dracula, who has traveled to England aboard a ship, the Demeter, leaving
the crew dead.
Lucy’s
Transformation and Death:
Despite help from Dr. Seward (one of her suitors) and the eccentric
expert Professor Van Helsing, Lucy dies and becomes a vampire. Van
Helsing and the others—Dr. Seward, Arthur Holmwood, and Quincey
Morris—track her down and kill the vampire Lucy to save her soul.
Mina in
Danger:
Meanwhile, Mina marries Jonathan, who has recovered in Budapest. But Dracula
begins targeting Mina. The group realizes Dracula is the source of the evil and
begins hunting him. Mina is bitten by Dracula and begins turning into a vampire
herself.
The Final
Chase:
Using Mina’s telepathic connection to Dracula, the group chases him back to
Transylvania. In a dramatic final confrontation, they destroy Dracula just
before sunset—Jonathan and Quincey stab him and cut his throat. Dracula
crumbles into dust, and Mina is saved. Quincey is fatally wounded in the
process.
